Judges critique

I would like to thank the Officers & Committee for inviting me to Judge their Championship Show I last Judged the Championship Show 23 years ago. (sadly this judging appointment came available because of the passing of Mrs Viv Phillips)
The weather was against us after weeks of glorious sunshine, the forecast was for rain and thunderstorms. So we had to be judged inside in a noisy hall which didn`t suit some of the show dogs.
A majority of the modern day greyhounds have lost fill of front with no heart room and spring of rib, they lack rise over the loin, all of which the breed standard asks for. Also a problem is over exaggerated quarters that make so many move close behind this spoils the overall movement fore & aft. I was a little disappointed how many of the show greyhounds had nervous temperaments. All dogs were shown in tip top condition. I was happy with all my class winners and I would like to thank all Exhibitors for their entries.
I would also like to thank my steward for the day Julie Mackenzie and for Clare Boggia for being on hand to help.

Junior Dog. (2-1)
1st. James & Ahrens Primavara`s Sobers Jannik Sinner at Simkhan (Imp) It.  Upstanding white dog pleasing head, long neck enough depth of chest would have like more fill of front and spring of rib, strong quarters need to settle on the move.

Special Awards Classes Critique

Many thanks to the Greyhound Club for inviting me to judge their Special Awards Classes following their championship show. Thanks also to my stewards who kept the ring running smoothly and of course, the exhibitors for bringing their hounds for me to assess and accepting my placings sportingly.

Special Award Junior Dog or Bitch (3)
1. James & Ahrens Primavera’s Sobers Jannik Sinner at Simkhan. This young dog stood out in this class for his balance, proportions and curves. Would prefer a slightly more refined head. Good front construction, and will likely continue to develop some more depth and width to chest as he continues to mature. Moved well in profile and held his curvy outline well, great width and drive from the rear, but would prefer cleaner elbows coming towards. Presented in great condition.
2. Spacey’s Inchydoney Memories Vlady Muscat at Hallimans (Imp Fra). It was difficult to split 2 & 3, they are very alike in many ways and after studying my catalogue I can understand why! Both feminine, less mature than 1 and not quite the return of upper arm. Lovely head, long strong neck into smooth top line with gentle curves. Good lay of shoulder, could have more depth and fill of chest. Moved well, but not quite the stride of 1.
3. Wilce Quinton’s Inchydoney Memories Vinlandia Raspberry Chocolat avec Kirjojax.

Special Award Open Dog or Bitch (5,3)
A small class with 2 dogs very different in type.
1. Newsham & Rowe’s Frankie Decuma via Windspiel (Imp Cze). A scopey dog who is more generous through. Appealed to me for his curves stacked and moving. Good head, correct ears and long neck. Great shape to top and underline. Would prefer more width coming and going, has a low reaching front and good use of the hindquarters moving around.
2. Howlett & Howden’s Rubicon’s Don’t Stop Believing (Imp USA). A very well balanced brindle parti dog. Perhaps a little strong in skull, but set on a long strong neck. Excellent front construction, elbows beneath body with good depth and spring of chest. He shapes up nicely on the move but standing can tend to flatten and slope a little over the loin. His hindquarters are well balanced and muscled. I preferred him coming and going to the winner, but he didn’t have the curves or free stride of 1 when moving.

Special Award Racing/Lure Coursing Dog or Bitch (8,2)
1. Gooding’s Shockwave Onyx. This black dog headed a large class. He caught my eye on the initial go around with his free easy action and curves on the move. Clean head, strong neck and well laid shoulders. Would prefer him to be more generous in angulation fore and aft. Good spring of rib and curves to top and underline.
2. Thompson’s Shockwave Sycuan. Brindle dog, again shown in good muscular condition. Good head, long strong neck into well angulated front. A little shorter through the body than 1 and I would prefer a little more depth and spring of chest. Excellent curves to top and underline and moved well, just not covering the ground as well as 1.
3. Mallen-Wallace’s Droopy’s Tavern.
