2024 Judging Criteria

 

Roll of Honour

Awarded by The Greyhound Club to senior members who no longer wish, or are unable, to judge.

 

A1 List

For person who have previously been approved by The Kennel Club to award CCs in the breed and have completed their first appointment. To have the support of The Greyhound Club.

Must submit a written critique as requested by the Greyhound Club and the Dog Press.

 

Additional Conditions

Agreed not to judge the breed at CC level more frequently than once every 18 months minimum, but preferably two years.

Promotion to the A1 list will be considered by The Greyhound Club following a satisfactory report from The Kennel Club for a first time appointment to award CCs in the breed.


JEP Level 4 CC judge

Requirements to meet this level:

* Attend and passed a breed-specific assessment for the specific breed run by The Kennel Club

Eligibility to judge:

* Award Challenge Certificates in the respective breed

* Any variety classes, groups and best in show at open and limited shows

 

 

A2 List

For person who fulfil all the requirements for the A3 list and who have been assessed in accordance with Kennel Club requirements and accepted by The Kennel Club for inclusion on an A2 list and have the support of The Greyhound Club.

 

A3 List (Breed Specialists)

Requirements include:

Minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed and have the support of The Greyhound Club.

To have judged a minimum of 25 Greyhound classes.

To have judged a minimum of 40 Greyhounds.

To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 Greyhounds when they obtained their first entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book.( Save in exceptional circumstances.) ( KC Policy )

To have attended at least 1 Greyhound Club approved breed-judging seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club Code of Best Practice and passed a Greyhound Club approved examination and / or assessment where applicable.

To have stewarded at 12 shows.

To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer on Confirmation and Movement.

To have attended a Conformation and Movement 'Hands on' Assessment conducted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the assessment.

To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer, and passed the relevant examination on Kennel Club regulations and Judging Procedures.

 

A3 (Non Specialists)

Requirements include:

Minimum of 7 years judging experience in any one breed (to include five years in this breed) and have the support of The Greyhound Club.

To have judged a minimum of 25 classes in this breed.

To have judged 40 dogs in this breed.

To have attended at least one Greyhound Club approved breed judging seminar and passed a Greyhound Club approved examination.

To have stewarded at 12 shows.

To have bred and/or owned a minimum of three dogs in a hound breed when they obtained their first entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book.

To have awarded CCs in at least one other breed

 

JEP Level 3

Requirements to meet this level:

* Undergo minimum of three mentoring sessions with a minimum of 12 months between first and third session

* Be observed judging a breed club show, breed supported entry show or championship show without CCs once mentoring sessions have been undertaken

* Complete remaining 10 full-day stewarding appointments (onetime qualification)

* Have owned/bred a minimum of three dogs when they obtained their first entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book – save for exceptional circumstances (one-time qualification for first breed in which a judge awards CCs)

* Attended the appropriate sub-group field trial/open gundog working test for first gundog breed or ring procedure at licensed shows (German Shepherd Dog education programme) online exam (one-time qualification)

* Have achieved the relevant hands-on experience in line with the stated requirements for the relevant breed: (Greyhounds are in Tier 1 Traditional Route 30 dogs/ JEP route 15 dogs)

The following types of event may be used to claim hands-on experience numbers:

Breed classes at championship shows without CCs

Breed classes at open shows

Breed classes at limited shows

Mock/training classes at breed club shows (practical judging days) – only one occasion can be claimed and a maximum of five dogs

Dogs judged at Kennel Club approved assessments, maximum of five dogs – only one occasion and a maximum of five dogs. Cannot be used in addition to mock classes

Dogs judged at inter or intra-club single-breed matches

Special award classes at breed club shows

Supported entry shows

Dogs judged at single breed dog of the year competitions

Overseas appointments

Dogs judged at the following types of event may not be included in a judge’s hands-on experience:

AVNSC and variety classes

At fun days

Conjointly with other judges at events where the candidate judge is not required to give independent judgment on the dogs

Any JEP mentoring sessions

 

Eligibility to judge:

* Unlimited number of classes for the respective breed at limited, open or championship shows (no CCs)

* Any variety classes groups and best in show at limited shows

 

 

B List (Breed Specialists)

To have five years experience owning and exhibiting in this breed and to have the support of The Greyhound Club.

To have attended one Greyhound Club approved breed judging seminar and passed an assessment where applicable.

 

B List (Non Specialist)

Minimum of five years judging experience in any hound breed and to have the support of The Greyhound Club.

To have awarded CCs in any hound breed.

To have attended one Greyhound Club approved breed judging seminar and passed an assessment where applicable.

 

Additional Conditions for B List

Must submit a written critique as requested by The Greyhound Club and the Dog Press.

 

JEP Level 2

Requirements to meet this level:

First breed:

* Take and pass requirements of a dog show judge examination. Judges attending an online requirements of a dog show judge seminar may take the exam via The Kennel Club Academy

* Pass points of a dog assessment

* Attend a breed appreciation day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination (MCE) for the respective breed

* View ring stewarding seminar and take online quiz

* Complete critique writing seminar and take online quiz

Subsequent breeds:

* Attend a breed appreciation day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination (MCE) for each breed. Note: Not mandatory for group judge for breeds in the group that they are not approved at level 4, but attendance strongly recommended

Eligibility to judge:

Unlimited number of classes for the respective breed at limited, open or championship shows (no CCs)

Any variety classes, groups and best in show at limited shows

 

C List   ( Breed  Specialist ) and ( Non Breed Specialist ) .

For aspiring judges who have shown an interest in the breed and have the support of The Greyhound Club.

 

Additional Conditions

Must submit a written critique as requested by The Greyhound Club and the Dog Press.

Agree not to judge the breed at Open Shows more than twice a year.

JEP Level 1

Requirements to meet this level:

* Minimum of five years proven interest in pedigree dogs

* Attend a requirements of a dog show judge seminar (but not mandatory to take and pass examination)

* Attend a conformation and movement seminar

* Complete a minimum of two full-day stewarding appointments

Eligibility to judge

Up to three classes (four if one is a puppy class) for any breed at limited or open shows.

These amendments will come into effect for shows held on or after 1 January 2024 and apply to judges signing contracts from the date of this announcement (21 August 2023). Existing CC judges are exempt from this requirement.

Judges Education Programme (JEP) Level 1 (old C List) criteria is as follows, with amends underlined:

*Minimum of five years proven interest in pedigree dogs

*Attend a Conformation and Movement seminar hosted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer

*Complete a minimum of two full-day stewarding appointments

*Attend a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge seminar and pass associated exam (either in person or online via Kennel Club Academy)

*Pass the Points of a Dog assessment conducted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer

(Previously it was a requirement that passing the Points of a Dog assessment and Requirements of a Dog Show Judge exam was part of JEP Level 2 criteria.)

Consequently, JEP Level 2 criteria (Old B List) is now amended as follows:

*Attend a Breed Appreciation Day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination for the respective breed

*View ring stewarding seminar and take online quiz via Kennel Club Academy

*Complete critique writing seminar and take online quiz via Kennel Club Academy

Whilst completing the critique writing and stewarding seminars remain a JEP Level 2 requirement, the Board has agreed that they can be undertaken at any time, and that the judge does not need to wait until they meet Level 1 criteria, and are recommended to view prior to stewarding or judging.

Judges sitting multiple-choice exams held at Breed Appreciation Days from 1 January 2024 will be required to meet the amended Level 1 criteria.
