ICritique
t was an honour to judge the Greyhound Club Championship Show. My sincere thanks must be given to the Officers and Committee for making the day so enjoyable and relaxed, and of course to
the exhibitors who entered their Greyhounds and gave me the opportunity to judge their hounds.
The entry made for an interesting judging appointment with some decisions requiring much consideration to weigh up where compromises could be made. Finding the ideal Greyhound shape was not
the easiest with toplines varying from being flat through to sloping,
neither of which are desirable. There were also a number of exhibits who were upright in front assembly which affected their overall balance and also resulted in stilted front movement. I
do also need to mention coats – my hands were not the cleanest by the end of the day so maybe some pre-show baths would be recommended to ensure all hounds have a fine, close
coat presented to its best order. I was thrilled with my BIS winner, a bitch I have awarded highly before and who truly represents how a Greyhound can be in their prime in older years. With
my principle winners, each demonstrated the desired breed typical movement with low forward reach, plenty of rear drive and covering the ground efficiently which is so important – a
Greyhound should come into its own in profile movement and this was where some of my closer decisions were made today.

Junior Dog (1,0a)
1st James, James & Ahrens Primavera - Sobers Jannik Sinner At Simkhan (IMP IT) Almost entirely white male, just over 12 months in age. An upstanding young dog who is undeniably male.
Quite broad in head lacking some refinement and elegance. Strong neck of good length leading into a well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. He can stand a little ten-to-two in front, he
is still young so more depth and development of his chest may help here. Pleasing length of body, balanced throughout with slight arch over loin and sufficient tuck up in underline. Very
well conditioned with lovely muscletone, not overdone. He moved out true coming and going and, in profile, covered the ground with good reach in front and sufficient
rear drive.
Yearling Dog (No Entries)
Post Graduate Dog (4,0a)
1st Newsham, Rowe & Rowe - Frankie Decuma Via Windspiel (IMP CZE) 22 month dark brindle who has much to like about him. The standard describes the general appearance of a Greyhound as
‘strongly built, upstanding, of generous proportions’ and this dog its this description to the letter. He is handsome with no coarseness whatsoever, with a masculine head and elegant lines
throughout. Super neck, long and elegantly arched. Excellent shoulder with deep brisket and his front legs set well under his body. One of the few today with a good spring of rib. Excels in
top and underline with gentle curves. I would not want anymore rear angulation as he is a dash long in second thigh. Long tail, correctly set. He was the most balanced in this class today
and also the best mover in profile. While he does move a fraction close behind moving away, his profile action was accurate with the desired low front reach and plenty of rear propulsion.
In the challenge, his correct shape and profile movement could not be passed and he secured the DCC. In the BIS challenge, he was rather unsettled as his
kennelmate was the BCC winner but he was a worthy RBIS winner.
2nd Howlett, Boggia & Koulermou - Ina’s Fashion Imperial (IMP DEU) 14 month brindle who is less mature than the winner, as you would expect given his age. Lovely headpiece, long skull,
well balanced, dark eye and correctly set ears. Another with a superb neck, good in length, muscled and not exaggerated. Not quite the shoulder and front assembly of 1. Good depth of chest,
ribs set well back and pleasing tuck-up in underline. Strong loin, slightly arched, leading into a balanced rear assembly with well bent stifle and hocks let down. On the move, he is
accurate out and back. He could occasionally lift a little too much in front
but once settled, he moved out with a desirable action while also holding his shape. When I called him into the ring to challenge for the RDCC, he really settled and showed off his qualities –
while he has plenty of developing to do, his type and elegance held my eye and I felt him a deserving reserve best male today, winning the RDCC.
3rd Sawer - Boughton Back On Top
Limit Dog (2,0a)
1st Wilce Quinton - Azravi’s Marked By The Sunrise At Kirjojax (IMP NOR) Almost entirely white, nearly 3 years old. Well proportioned head, with clean lines, dark eye and gentle expression.
Lovely neck, well muscled and elegantly arched. He is altogether upright in front assembly from shoulder through to pastern. Excellent depth of chest with ribs well set back and sufficient
tuck up. Would prefer more arch over the loin to complete the outline. Well muscled rear, of balanced angles. Well knuckled feet and long, correctly set tail. Moved out accurately and
soundly coming and going, could have more reach in fore action in profile.
2nd Brookes - Estet Classic Oligarch At Grenowood (IMP) 6½ year old brindle of heavier build than 1. Masculine and upstanding. Pleasing head with good
chiselling and correct earset. Long, balanced neck leading into a well laid shoulder and forelegs set well under his body. Would prefer more spring of pastern. Deep brisket and balanced
length of body. He could be more curvy in underline and presents a flat topline. Well conditioned. On the move, he was rather wide behind going away. In profile, he moved with a little too much
lift in front but with plenty of rear propulsion.
Open Dog (2,0a)
1st Harrison-Stratford - Ch Southpoint Niemeyer At Highwick (IMP PRT) 3 year old red whose overall type is my cup of tea. Undeniably male with handsome head, a little broad in skull but
dark eye and correct rose shaped ears. He is rather broad throughout, in neck and across his chest. Straight forelegs, well knuckled feet and slightly sprung pasterns. Excels in shoulder
with super layback and desired return of upper arm. Good depth of chest, ribs well set
back. Rather flat in topline. Well angulated rear assembly. On the move, he was true out and back, displayed good low reach in front but lacked power and propulsion in the rear. I judged this
dog when he was a junior when he was my RDCC - he has many breed typical qualities, but he just lacked some spark and enthusiasm today, losing out to the more shapely younger males who also
edged it on the move too.
2nd Boggia - Ch & Dk Ch Fionn Clann Lucullus For Boughton (IMP RUS) 5½ blue brindle of different type to 1. Masculine head, well proportioned, strong jaw and correct earset. Preferred
his neck, being less thickly set while still muscled. Not the front assembly of the winner, being more upright in shoulder and pastern, and having less return of upper arm. Capacious chest
with good length of ribcage. He could occasionally stand with his topline sloping away. Well balanced rear with good bend of stifle, hocks let down and muscled thigh. Long tail, correctly
set. He moved out accurately, both coming and going and in profile, covering the ground efficiently. Handled to give of his best.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Open Dog (2,0a)
1st Gooding - Shockwave Onyx 5 year old black whose more curvy outline edged him to win this class. Pleasing head, long and lean with dark eye and gentle expression. Well muscled neck. Good
front assembly with sufficient lay of shoulder, straight forelegs and good substance of bone. Preferred his infill of
chest. Shapely underline and topline, presenting a balanced picture and outline. A little straight in rear angulation. He moved true and in profile, moving out with a lightness of foot to cover
the ground well.
2nd Ball - Satteo Jet 7 year black of heavier build than 1. Masculine head, dark eye with lovely expression. A little coarse in neck and more upright in shoulder than the winner. Well
knuckled feet and pasterns slightly sprung. Would prefer more infill in chest. Ribs set well back and well sprung. A fraction flat in topline. Pleasing rear angulation with sufficient bend of
stifle. Another who moved soundly out and back, just lacked reach in fore-action when moving in profile.
Veteran Dog (2,1a)
1st Mallen-Wallace - Droopys Tavern Blue brindle parti, nearly 9 years old. Lovely for size and presented an elegant outline which clinched his awards today. Good headpiece, well
proportioned with correct earset. Pleasing length of neck. Would prefer a dash more layback of shoulder. Lovely substance of bone.
Balanced length of rib cage to loin, with well sprung ribs, good tuck-up, strong loin which was gently arched. Sufficient bend of stifle and hocks well let down, good muscletone for his age.
He did initially move out a little erratically in front but once settled, he covered the ground well and held his shape. BVD and Best Racing/Coursing Dog.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Veteran Dog (5,0a)
1st Mallen-Wallace - Droopys Tavern See 1st VD.
2nd Bakewell - Affleck Barney Bestest Bud 8½ years, light brindle who had the best coat from the male entry, fine and close, and clean to the touch – a credit to his owner. Lovely head with
the kindest of expressions. Well arched neck, of balanced length. A little upright in front assembly. Sufficient depth of chest, good spring of rib and curvy underline. He did stand ‘humpy’
in topline with a fraction too much rise over the loin. Excellent condition with good muscletone. Could have a dash more bend of stifle. On the move, he was true fore and aft and another
who covered the ground with a lightness of foot.
3rd Ball - Satteo Jet
Puppy Bitch (No Entries)
Junior Bitch (1,0a) 1st Wilce Quinton - Inchydoney Memories Vinlandia Raspberry Chocolat Avec Kirjojax Brindle, just 12 months old. There are many qualities to like about this young
Greyhound. Ultra feminine, lovely headpiece of balanced proportions and chiselled lines. Elegantly arched neck. Sufficient lay of shoulder, would prefer more return of upper arm, she is
also a little upright in pastern. Deep chest and ribs well sprung. To be ultra critical, she could have a fraction more length of ribcage to complete her balance of body. Curvy underline and
desired arch over the loin. Well angulated rear, nothing overdone or exaggerated. She moved out accurately, very sound of foot with pleasing profile action to cover the ground with
efficiency.
Yearling Bitch (1,0a)
1st Boggia - Boughton Back In Style JW Dark brindle, 22 months old. She was a little unsettled and not completely at ease. Pleasing head, dark eye and correct rose shaped ears. Lovely
length of neck, muscled yet elegantly arched. Could have a greater layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Good bone and
straight forelegs. Shapely underline with sufficient tuck-up. She could occasionally stand with her topline falling away. Well muscled rear assembly. Long, correctly set tail. While she didn’t
float around the ring, she was true coming and going and displayed low reach in front and drive from the rear.
Post Graduate Bitch (3,0a)
A close decision between 1 and 2 in this class, two littermates who are also litter sisters to the winner of Yearling Bitch.
1st Boggia - Boughton Back For Good JW 22 months old, dark brindle. Feminine headpiece with gentle expression, well placed ears and another with a good neck, well proportioned with her
body. Would prefer more return of upper arm on her as well. Straight forelegs, pasterns slightly sprung and correct well knuckled feet. Preferred her infill of chest compared to 2. Lovely
length of ribcage, could be a little curvier in topline. Balanced rear angulation with good bend of stifle and balanced length of second thigh. She was the best mover in this class with her
accurate profile movement securing her the top position in this class. Good reach in front and plenty of rear propulsion. Handled to give of her best.
2nd Ball - Boughton Back In Time 22 months old, brindle. I preferred her outline, presenting a more curvy picture compared to 1.
Would prefer her to be a little more feminine, being rather plain in head but strong jaw, dark eye and good earset. Well muscled neck. Could have better front angulation and she currently
lacks infill in her forechest. She has a balanced outline, with plenty of tuck-up in underline and good arch over the loin. Pleasing rear angulation with hocks well let down. Moved out true
coming and going. In profile, she lacked some reach in front so not as free moving as 1.
3rd Prince - Westview Puddles
Limit Bitch (5,0a)
1st Holder & Boggia - Boughton Back To The Future JW 22 months old, brindle who ticked a lot of boxes for me today. Well proportioned head, lean lines, slight stop and strong jaw. Elegantly
arched neck leading into pleasing shoulder assembly. Good substance of bone. Capacious chest, super underline and ribs set well back. She has a lovely length of body and presents a balanced
picture, with sufficient arch over her loin. Well conditioned. Balanced rear angulation, nothing over-exaggerated, which she used very well on the move. She moved out accurately out and
back and in profile, she covered the ground with
low reach in front and plenty of rear drive. A different type to my BCC, her qualities edged her comfortably to RBCC.
2nd Ball - Boughton Back In Time See 2nd PGB.
3rd Langcake & Short - Southpoint Normandia At Langshor (IMP PRT)
Open Bitch (2,1a)
1st Boggia & Graham - Rubicon’s Songbird By Boughton (IMP USA) 2½ year old blue brindle. Curvy in outline from nose to tail, she had one of the better toplines from the entry today. Smaller
in frame compared to some of the other class winners. Feminine headpiece, a little light in eye colour. Balanced length of neck, somewhat thickly set. Sufficient layback of shoulder, straight
forelegs and pasterns slightly sprung. Deep brisket, ribs set well back, I’d prefer a fraction more spring of rib. Lovely underline and tuck-up which accompanied her curvy topline. Good
bend of stifle and balanced length of second thigh. She moved out well and with enthusiasm, true coming and going and holding her shape in profile. Just felt the Limit winner had a greater
freedom of action with her movement.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Open Bitch (6,0a)
1st Prince - Westview Puddles 6½ year old brindle who edged to the front of this class with ease. Very feminine exhibit, lovely dark eye and gentle expression. Pleasing neck leading into
shoulder and front assembly which was the best in this class. Good bone, straight front legs and well knuckled feet. Balanced
length of body, ribs set well back, curvy underline and tuck up and sufficient shape in topline. Well muscled and good bend of stifle. She moved out true and had the best profile action on
the move.
2nd Clarke - Shockwave Amber 5½ year old light brindle. More heavily built than the winner. Good head, well proportioned and strong jaw. Sufficient length of neck, could be more elegantly
arched. Pleasing layback of shoulder, she is a little out at elbows and weaker in pastern than 1. Another with a balanced
length of body, good luck up in underline, although a tad flat in topline. Sufficient angulation in rear assembly and correct tailset. Moved out accurately coming and going and covered
the ground well.
3rd Abell - Ballyoak Queen
Veteran Bitch (2,0a)
1st Newsham - Ch Europa Decuma Via Windspiel (IMP CZE) 8 year old red. The standout winner today, she oozes quality and type, exemplifies correct
angulation and shape, and has textbook movement. I have awarded her a CC and BOB before and nothing could touch her again today. My notes for her critique start with “just beautiful”
and she is - she effortlessly combines elegance with power and an upstanding presence. Feminine headpiece, superb neck and an excellent shoulder and front assembly. Straight forelegs set
well under her body, pasterns well sprung and good feet. She has the best of outlines with curves in the right places in both top and underlines. Incredibly balanced rear angulation with
balanced length of second thigh. There is nothing exaggerated about this Greyhound. With maturity, she has blossomed and she is in her prime. On the move, she is foot perfect, accurate out and
back
and the best of profile actions with a freedom of movement through her low reach in front and strong rear drive and action. BCC, BIS and BVIS.
2nd Mallen-Wallace - Kelisboro Sasha 8½ year old white with black parti. A different type and build compared to the winner. She is
good for size. Well proportioned head, slight stop, dark eye and lovely expression. Correct earset. Neck is a little coarsely set. Pleasing layback of shoulder and return of upper arm.
Good depth of chest and sufficient spring of rib. Would prefer a dash more length of loin to complete her balance in body. Well muscled and good bend of stifle for sufficient rear
angulation. She moved out a little close behind and lacked the fluidity of action of the winner.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Veteran Bitch (6,1a)
1st Bakewell & Scholes - Nutts Corner 7 year old black who does not show her years. She secured her position of first in this class and later Best Racing/Lure Coursing in Show with her
balance and outline, being breed typical with elegance and curves. Feminine throughout, good head with a strength of foreface and lean skull, dark eye and gentle expression. Lovely length
of neck, elegantly arched and set. Could have more layback in shoulder and return of arm. Good substance of bone and correct feet. Curvy underline and slight arch over the loin. Ribs well
sprung and good length of body. Presented in excellent condition and handled to give of her best. Pleasing rear. Moved out true out and back, lacking a little reach and drive, but covered
the ground soundly while holding a
lovely shape. BRCIS.
2nd Heyman - Magical Saskia 7 year old fawn. Lovely headpiece, long and clean in lines and well balanced. Correct rose shaped ears. Neck is elegantly arched leading into a well laid
shoulder with forelegs set well under her body. Straight forelegs, deep brisket and good spring to ribcage. She was flatter in topline compared to the winner. Another shown in good
condition. Rather straight in rear angulation but lovely muscletone. She was true coming and going but lacked a freedom of movement in profile.
3rd Mallen-Wallace - Kelisboro Sasha
