Judges Critique

I was highly delighted to be invited to judge your championship show and what an honour. It was only my 7th time awarding CCs in the 29 years of judging your lovely breed. I have bred and owned Whippets for nearly 60 years and there are many similarities in the two breeds plus their personalities.
I am also honoured to have been invited to judge their cousins (It Greyhounds) at their championship show in July. What joy for a hound specialist to have judged all three breeds this year.
I was amazed to see all my main winners were all imports from different parts of the world. I can only hope that this is put to good use for the good of the breed and the right breeding is encouraged for the future.
I was sad to say that there was so much poor movement within the breed but that they are not alone as many breeds have to. It seems everybody concentrates on everything else and forgets about the movement. Hopefully some of the imports will put this right.
Again thank you for your entries and respect of my judging.
PD (3) 1 & BP. Wilce-Quinton’s AZRAVI’S MARKED BY THE SUNRISE AT KIRJOJAX (Imp Nor). White dog at 11months old. A good size and shape. Super In head long and chiselled as standard calls for. Correct front, bone and feet with deep brisket and correct rib cage. Correct top line and slightly arched to the hind quarters. Pleasing on the move. One to watch in the future I feel. 2. Howlett’s RUBICON’S DON’TSTOP BELIEVING (Imp USA). 7 mth old dark brindle parti-coloured. Giving away 4 mths is a lot in this lovely sighthound. He still needs to settle and needs more ring time. His head needs to develop. Correct length of neck for his size. Good front and shaped feet. Excellent top line. Still would prefer better in hind quarters but should come better with age. Lovely in front movement. 3. Spacey’s INCHYDONEY MEMORIES TALLISMAN AT HALLIMANS (Imp Fra).
JD (2) 1. Harrison-Stratford’s SOUTHPOINT NIEMEYER AT HIGHWICK (Imp Prt). 17 mth Red boy with lovely long and flat head. Well shaped eye and correct shaped ear. Correct length of neck. Good front, bone and feet. He appears to be very long in body and out of proportion. Pleasing on the move. 2. Howlett’s RUBICON’S DON’T STOP BELIEVING.
YD (1) 1 & DCC. Bogart’s INA’S FASHION FLAIR AT INCITATUS (Imp Dec). 22 mth Red dog. Excellent size and shape with just the best of heads long sloping face and flat skull with well-shaped ears and lovely long arched neck running into excellent shoulders. Just the best front and well arched feet. Deep brisket and well sprung ribs. Correct top line and sloping well over the hind quarters which again are correct. A touch short in tail (which looks as if damaged at birth). A joy to watch on the move covering the ground well and the handler trying to keep up. I was delighted to award him the CC which I discovered was his third. Congratulations always lovely to make up a dog at a club show.
PGD (4,1) 1. Boggia’s WHIRLAWAY ALL FIRED UP AT BOUGHTON (Imp Aus). 2 year old Red well-built dog. Great head and expression with correct length of neck and shoulders. Would prefer slightly better in front and for me he could be deeper in brisket. Good well sprung rib cage. Correct top line. Would like him to be better on the move. 2. Brookes ESTET CLASSIC OLIGARCH AT GRENOWOOD (Imp Est). 4.5 year old dark brindle much taller than the winner. Good long head and flat skull. Good ear carriage. Long in neck with good shoulders, front and tidy feet. Deep in brisket and correct top line. Prefer better in hind quarters. Not the best on the move. 3. Mallen-Wallace’s DROOPYS TAVERN.

LD (2,1) 1. Sawyer’s JAXX TELLER AT STONELOW. 9 year old mostly white with blue bridle spots showing well for his age. Would like better shaped head. Well-muscled and strong front but with flat feet. Good depth of brisket and correct rib cage. Correct top line and hind quarters. A castrated male still moving well.
OD (3) 1 & Res DCC Bogart’s CH. INA’S FASHION EXALTED AT INCITATUS (Imp Deu). 4 yr old White with large red spots and half-brother to the DCC winner. Well-made head with the right dimensions and good ear set of the correct size. Good shoulder front but would just like slightly tighter feet. Good depth of brisket and well sprung rib cage. Would like to see him carrying a touch more weight. Correct hind quarters. Moved best of the class. 2. Boggia’s CH & DK CH FIONN CLANN LUCULLUS FOR BOUGHTON. 4 year old brindle of correct size and shape. Lovely in head, front bone and feet. Good depth and correct topline. Excellent condition but would prefer better in rear movement. 3. Howden & Howlett's SKYSWIFT NEW MOON.
Sp Racing/Lure Coursing OD (5,1). 1. Ball’s SATTEO JET. Black and a solid dog. Lovely head. Thick in neck with good front. Excellent feet. Good depth of brisket. Light on the hind quarters and poor in movement. Typical racer. 2.Mallen-Wallace’s  DROOPYS TAVERN. 6 going on 7 yr old Parti coloured. Lovely head, front and depth of brisket. Prefer better in top line and hind quarters. Poor on the move.
VD (2). 1 & BV. Holder’s CH BOUGHTON BLAKENEY Sh.CM. 11 year old and still a magnificent dog. (My CC winner of 8 years ago then making him up.) Excellent size and shape with lovely head, neck, shoulder, front and feet. Deep in brisket and well sprung rib cage. Lovely on the move, but he is starting to show his age now for the show ring. 2. Sawyer’s JAXX TELLER AT STONELOW.
Sp Racing/Lure Coursing VD. (4,2). 1 Clarke’s WACHOVIA BENJY Red. Stands all square. Good head with correct amount of bone, good front and top line. Shallow in brisket but pleasing on the move. 2. Thompson’s PUPPY EYES AT MUICKS. Parti- colour with good head, neck, front and feet. Would like better in top line and he is shallow in brisket. High behind on his quarters.
1. PB(1) 1. Boggia’s RUBICON’S SONG BIRD (Imp USA). 7 mth old dark brindle. She is just a lovely puppy but at such a young age she needs plenty of time. Excellent head and well-shaped eye which at present is a tough light. Good front and depth of brisket. She is moving a little erratic at present. She needs moving on a loose lead even if her head goes down and with age she can be encouraged to lift her head.
JB (1) 1. Langcake & Short ‘s SOUTHPOINT NORMANDIA AT LANGSHOR. 14 mths. Lovely on the stand. Pleasing head and neck. Good front and feet with deep brisket and correct rib cage. Excellent hind quarters. Fighting against her lead so so moving well in any direction.
YB (1). 1 Cutter & Lubin’s  INA’S FASHION FINEST OF CHOSOVI (Imp Deu). Litter sister to the DCC. Brindle lovely feminine expression with beautiful clean lines. Excellent head and neck which flow into great shoulders. Good front and feet. Correct top line and hind quarters. She was on the day moving very close behind but hopefully this will improve with maturity.

PGB (3,1) 1 & Res BCC Holder & Boggia’s. FIONN CLANN BLUEBELLE. (Imp Rus). 22 mths old and just a lovely girl. Great clean lines with excellent head, neck and front. The best of feet. Good depth of brisket and top line. Good standing on hind quarters. Would prefer better on the move in both directions. 2. Sawyer’s YOU LITTLE UNA AT STONELOW. 9 yr old blue and litter sister to the limit dog winner. Not so refined as others, a solid bitch with broad head. Good front and depth of brisket. Well-muscled behind and solid on the move.
LB (2). 1. Harrison-Stratford’s SOUTHPORT LADY LOKI AT HIGHWICK (Imp Prt). 2 yr old tall upstanding bitch and well up on the leg. Lovely long arched neck running into excellent shoulders. For me I found her with not much spring of rib which spoilt her outlook. Correct topline and hind quarters. Prefer better in her rear movement. 2. Boggia’s BOUGHTON BIRRONG. I preferred the shape and size more on this bitch than the winner but she just did not want to be handled. Pleasing head and neck on this 2.5 yr old. Excellent front and feet with good depth of brisket and correct rib cage. Excellent hind quarters. She was not giving her all on the move.
OB (5) A great class of champions. 1, BCC & BOB Newsham’s CH EUROPA DECUMA VIA WINDSPIEL (Imp Cze). Six year old Red of the correct size and shape. So beautiful in outline on the stand and on the move. Excellent head, neck, front and feet. Good spring of rib with excellent top line and hind quarters. I didn’t know this bitch but was delighted to award her the BCC and BOB which was her 17th. A very worthy champion.
2. Boggia’s CH INA’S FASHION DESIGN BY BOUGHTON (Imp Ger). Dark brindle 6 year old. Much taller than the winner. Goo d size and shape with pleasing head and neck. Good depth of brisket and correct spring of rib. Correct in hind quarters. Not moving so well in rear movement. 3. Cutter’s CH. ZORADEN MY GIRL AT CHOSOVI.
Sp Racing/Lure Coursing OB (4,1). 1. Thompson’s BRIDGET’S BLUE. Black and blue refined bitch of a good size and shape. She was lacking chest for me. Good bone and feet. Small head but with good pigmentation. Good top line and hind quarters. Pleasing on the move. 2. Abel’s BALLYOAK QUEEN. Black with white trim. Good bone, feet. Shallow in brisket would like better on the move front and rear. 3. Sadler’s HUARACHE MAGS.
VB (3,1). 1. Heath’s CH. BOUGHTON BACK TO BLIGHTY Sh.CM. 9 yr old dark brindle parti-colour. ( My other CC winner last time I judged at WKC 2015). Good size and shape with pleasing head and expression. Good front and bone and great depth of brisket. Correct top line and hind quarters. Good on the move. 2. Russell’s KATES ME FLYER. Blue smaller and finer with broad head. Fine in front with good feet and depth of brisket. Prefer better on the move.
Sp Racing/Lure Coursing VB (2) 1. Sawyer’s YOU LITTLE UNA AT STONELOW. 2.Russell’s  KATES ME FLYER.

Special Award Classes Critique
I was delighted to receive the invitation to Judge the Special Award Classes for the Greyhound Club Championship Show, I thank the Committee for giving me the opportunity and many thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their lovely Hounds under me. I was over the moon with my entry across the three classes which afforded me some difficult choices to make.
The heat that day was exceptional but the hounds, and their handlers, seemed to cope extremely well but it did mean that I felt that I couldn’t run them out as much as I usually like to do. The atmosphere at the show was very like a garden party and I thoroughly enjoyed my day, thank you to everyone for making it so special.

Special Award Yearling Dog or Bitch (5,0abs)
1st Cutters – Ina’s Fashion Finest Of Chosovi (Imp DEU); lovely outline to this bitch, feminine yet strongly built with lovely curves overall. Long, lean head piece with good jaw and teeth, lovely rose shaped ears and neck of good length & strength. Well set back shoulder placement, with muscle, elbows set under, super depth & width of body and well ribbed back. Slight arch over the loin flowing into curvy rear quarters with muscling & width  on first & second thighs and hocks well let down. Movement effortless and covering the ground very well.
2nd Howletts – Rubicon’s Don’t Stop Believing (Imp USA); another nice type of good shape and so well conditioned in muscle and depth of body for one so young. Good for head shape and strength of jaw with a firm neck of length & strength with slight arch. Shoulder placement well set back, muscled over front & elbows set under. Good depth & width of body and well ribbed back into a firm loin. Nicely muscled thighs with width across, well set hocks and stood and moved out well on good feet.
3rd Harrison-Stratford – Southport Niemeyer At Highwick (Imp Prt)
4th Boggia – Rubicon’s Songbird (Imp USA)
5th Langcake & Short – Southport Normandia At Langshor (Imp Prt)

Special Award Open Dog or Bitch (9,2abs)
1st Newshams – Ch Europa Decuma Via Windspiel (Imp Cze); stunning bitch who moved out covering the ground effortlessly even in the heat. Loved her type and shapely outline and well conditioned muscling front and rear. Long, lean head with good jaw, good ear shape, lovely neck of length & strength flowing into her well laid shoulder with elbows set under. Body of correct depth & width, ribcage of good depth, well sprung ribs carried well back and slight arch over a firm loin. Super rear angulation with lovely width across the first & second thighs, lovely muscling, well set hocks and stood on good feet.
2nd Spacey – Inchydoney Memories Talisman At Hallimans (Imp Fra); young upstanding male of just under 1 year old who moved out well in the heat. Good in head & firm jaw & lovely rose shaped ears. A good length of neck with strength flowing into his well laid shoulder with elbows set correctly under. Good in body depth for his age, with width and ribs well sprung and carried back. Firm in loin with a very slight rise flowing into his well angled stifles. Lovely width across his first & second thighs with good, firm muscling. Well set hocks & stood on good feet.
3rd Howlett – Skyswift Moonlite Serenade
4th Boggia – Ch Ina’s Fashion Design By Boughton (Imp Ger)
5th Boggia – Whirlaway All Fired Up At Boughton (Imp Aus)

Special Award Racing/Lure Coursing Dog or Bitch (11,2abs)
Not the easiest class to judge for varying type, movement and conformation but nevertheless a delightful class of hounds and their owners.
1st Abell – Ballyoak Queen (Gsb141/141); feminine black & white trim bitch with a long, lean head & strong jaw, nicely shaped ears. Long neck of strength flowing into her well laid & muscled shoulder, elbows set under and sufficient in body depth & length. Well ribbed back into a firm loin with a very slight arch over, flowing into her rear quarters with good width & muscling across her first & second thighs. Well set hock & good feet but didn’t always co operate by standing herself out behind. Moved out well.
2nd Thompson – Puppy Eyes At Muicks; veteran male with a good head piece & jaws and another with nicely shaped ears. Good length & strength of neck, well laid shoulder with muscling, elbows set under & sufficient depth & breadth of body. Ribs well sprung and carried well back, firm in loin with slight rise over. Good in rear angulation with sufficient width & muscling of the first & second thighs and stood on good feet. Moved out well to take this placing.
3rd Mallen-Wallace – Droopys Tavern
4th Clarke – Wachovia Benjy
5th Sadler – Huarache Mags
